Share of voice is the percentage of the total conversation in a market that belongs to one brand, measured by mentions, engagement, or reach against named competitors. Measure it by picking a competitor set, counting comparable activity over a period, and tracking the brand's share of the total over time.
Share of voice imports a classic advertising concept into social: of all the attention available in this category, how much is ours? It is one of the few metrics that measures a brand against its market rather than against itself, which is why competitive clients ask for it.
First, fix the competitor set: three to six named competitors the client actually loses business to, agreed with the client so nobody disputes the field later. Second, choose the currency: mentions are the classic version, engagement share is often more meaningful for brand content, and follower or reach share is the bluntest but most stable. Third, count consistently over a period, then compute the client's portion of the combined total. The number itself matters less than its direction across quarters.
Share of voice responds to volume, distinctiveness, and events. Publishing more consistently than competitors moves it slowly and durably. Distinctive campaigns and earned conversation move it in spikes. A competitor going quiet moves it for free, which is worth noticing in the analysis, since share can rise while absolute performance is flat.
Organic share-of-voice measurement sees public activity only: it misses dark social, DMs, and communities, and mention-counting requires listening tools whose coverage varies. Present it as a directional competitive indicator, not a precise market share, and pair it with the client's own performance KPIs so a rising share never has to carry the whole report.
Share of voice belongs in reporting for clients in genuinely contested categories who name competitors in strategy conversations. For a local business without active social competitors, it is effort spent answering a question nobody asked.
