Which social media KPIs should agencies report to clients?

Verified and kept current by the Cloud Campaign team
Quick answer

Report the KPIs that connect to the client's goal: reach and impressions for awareness, engagement rate for content quality, clicks and traffic for consideration, and leads or conversions for revenue goals. Add follower growth as context, not a headline. Five to seven metrics tied to one goal beats twenty tied to nothing.

The KPI question is really a goal question in disguise. Every social metric is a KPI for somebody, so the agency's job is choosing the handful that map to what this client hired you to do, and having the discipline to leave the rest in the appendix.

Match metrics to the goal tier

For awareness goals, lead with reach, impressions, and video views, plus share of voice if you track competitors. For engagement and community goals, lead with engagement rate, comments, shares, and saves, which signal content that resonates rather than content that merely appears. For traffic and consideration, lead with link clicks, click-through rate, and social sessions in analytics. For revenue goals, lead with leads, conversions, and attributable value. Follower growth belongs in every report as context, but making it the headline trains clients to value the weakest metric.

The agency-specific additions

Two KPIs matter for the relationship itself even though they measure your operation rather than the client's audience: publishing consistency against the agreed calendar, and response time on incoming engagement. Reporting them shows accountability, and they are the two numbers entirely within your control.

Keep the set small and stable

Five to seven KPIs, chosen at onboarding and held stable for at least a quarter, is the workable size. Changing metrics monthly reads as hiding something, and clients cannot learn what good looks like if the yardstick keeps moving. When a metric needs to change, say so explicitly and show both during the transition.

Automate the assembly

KPI reporting should be a judgment task, not a spreadsheet task. Cloud Campaign pulls performance across every connected platform into client-facing reports in one click on every plan, white-labeled on the Team and Agency plans, so the agency's time goes into the two sentences of insight per metric that clients actually remember.
