What is a good engagement rate on social media?

Verified and kept current by the Cloud Campaign team
Quick answer

By follower count, 1 to 3 percent is solid on Instagram, anything above 5 percent is excellent, and Facebook and LinkedIn typically run below 1 to 2 percent. TikTok runs meaningfully higher, often 3 to 9 percent. An account's own trend is a better yardstick than any industry average.

Good is relative to platform, audience size, and industry, which is why honest benchmark answers come as ranges. The ranges below reflect the consistent center of published benchmark studies; treat them as orientation, not grading.

Typical ranges by platform

On Instagram, follower-based engagement between 1 and 3 percent is healthy for brands, and above 5 percent is excellent. Facebook brand pages commonly sit below 1 percent, which surprises clients but is normal for the platform's feed behavior. LinkedIn company pages typically land between 1 and 2 percent, with strong personal-adjacent content running higher. TikTok is the outlier, with engagement rates frequently between 3 and 9 percent because the format and recommendation system generate more interaction per view. Pinterest and YouTube engagement is measured differently enough, saves and watch behavior, that follower-based comparisons mislead.

Why small accounts run hot

Engagement rate falls as audiences grow. A 2,000-follower local business at 6 percent and a 500,000-follower brand at 1 percent may both be performing well. When reporting for clients, benchmark against accounts of similar size in similar industries, or better, against the client's own trailing average.

The benchmark that actually matters

The account's own trend is the yardstick with the least noise in it. Is this quarter's rate above the trailing six-month average? Are top posts teaching you anything repeatable? A client moving from 1.2 to 1.8 percent has a better story than a client static at 3 percent, whatever the industry table says.

Report it in context

Pair the rate with reach, because rate alone can rise while reach collapses. Cloud Campaign's performance reporting shows both together across platforms on every plan, so the good-or-not conversation happens with full context.
