How do you calculate engagement rate?

Quick answer

Divide total engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) by audience size, then multiply by 100. Engagement rate by followers is the standard version; dividing by reach or impressions instead measures how well content performed with the people who actually saw it. Pick one method and apply it consistently.

Engagement rate is one calculation with three defensible denominators, and most confusion comes from comparing rates that used different ones. The formula is always engagements divided by an audience figure, times 100. The choice is which audience figure.

The three versions

Engagement rate by followers divides total engagements on a post by follower count. It is the industry default and the version most benchmarks use, but it penalizes accounts whose content reaches beyond their followers. Engagement rate by reach divides by the number of people who saw the post, which measures content quality directly and is the fairest comparison between posts. Engagement rate by impressions divides by total views including repeats, producing the smallest number; it is most common in paid reporting. For recommendation-driven formats like Reels and TikTok, reach-based rates are far more meaningful than follower-based ones, since distribution regularly exceeds the follower base.

What counts as an engagement

At minimum: likes or reactions, comments, and shares. Saves belong in the count on Instagram, where they are one of the strongest quality signals. Clicks are sometimes included; if you include them, say so, because they inflate the rate relative to standard benchmarks.

Consistency beats precision

For client reporting, the specific method matters less than holding it constant. Choose one version, define it once in the report footer, and use it every month, so trend lines mean something. When a client compares your number against a benchmark article, check the denominators match before anyone panics.

In practice

No agency should compute this by hand across clients. Cloud Campaign's reporting tracks engagement and performance across every connected platform on every plan, leaving the agency to interpret the trend rather than build it.
