Should you build or buy social media management for your platform?

Quick answer

Build only if social media management is your core product. For everyone else, buying or embedding an existing platform is faster and cheaper: social publishing means maintaining integrations with eight-plus networks whose APIs change constantly, which is permanent engineering cost rather than a one-time build.

Software companies underestimate this build almost universally, because the demo version is genuinely easy. Posting to one network with an API key takes an afternoon. What takes years is everything after that.

What building actually commits you to

Each social network has its own API, authentication model, media requirements, rate limits, and review process for app permissions. Those APIs change without asking, and a change that breaks publishing is a production incident for every one of your customers at once. Then come the parts nobody scopes: token refresh and reconnection flows, retry logic for failed publishes, media transcoding per network, analytics ingestion, approval workflows, and a calendar interface users do not hate. The maintenance never ends, because the platforms never stop changing, so this is a permanent team rather than a project.

The honest case for building

Build when social publishing is your differentiator and the thing customers buy you for. If your roadmap is defined by social features and your engineers want to own that surface, building is defensible. Also build when your requirements are genuinely unusual enough that no existing platform fits, though this is claimed far more often than it is true.

What buying or embedding gives you

An embedded platform delivers a complete, maintained social product inside your own application in weeks rather than quarters, with someone else absorbing every API change forever. Cloud Campaign's embedded program does this through a customized view of the platform inside the partner's dashboard, plus API integration and SSO, and the partner chooses which features to expose and builds their own customer-facing plans around them. The distinguishing point against API-only vendors is that there is no front end to build: the working product arrives with the integration.

The decision test

Ask whether a customer would ever choose your product because your social scheduler is better than everyone else's. If the honest answer is no, and social is a gap you need filled so the rest of your suite is complete, that is the embed case rather than the build case.
