How do you track social media traffic with UTMs?

Quick answer

Add UTM parameters to every link you post: utm_source for the platform, utm_medium set to social or organic-social, and utm_campaign for the initiative. Analytics tools then attribute sessions and conversions to specific posts and networks, turning social traffic from a lump into a measurable channel.

UTMs are the cheapest attribution upgrade in social marketing: a few tagged parameters on each link, and suddenly the client's analytics can say which network, campaign, and post sent each visit. Without them, most social traffic hides inside direct or a generic referral bucket, and the channel gets less credit than it earns.

The three parameters that matter

utm_source names the platform: facebook, instagram, linkedin. utm_medium names the channel type; pick one convention, social or organic-social, and never vary it, because analytics groups by exact string. utm_campaign names the initiative: spring-sale, evergreen, product-launch. utm_content is optional but useful for distinguishing posts within a campaign. Build links with any UTM generator or a shared spreadsheet formula; the discipline matters more than the tooling.

Consistency is the entire game

UTMs are case-sensitive strings, so Facebook, facebook, and FB become three different sources in reporting. Write a one-page tagging convention per agency, lowercase everything, use hyphens, fixed vocabulary for mediums, and apply it across every client. The convention is what makes cross-client reporting possible and what makes a report defensible when someone audits the numbers.

Where UTMs pay off

Tagged traffic shows up cleanly in the client's analytics: sessions, engagement, and conversions by source and campaign. That is the bridge from social activity to business results, and it is what lets a report say this campaign drove 340 sessions and 12 inquiries instead of gesturing at correlation.

Practical cautions

Only tag links pointing to properties you or the client measure; UTMs on someone else's site help no one. Use link-in-bio and shortened links where platforms bury URLs. And never put anything personal or sensitive in a UTM string, since it lives in the URL forever.
