Do you need a business account to auto-publish to Instagram?

Yes. Instagram's API only allows scheduling tools to publish automatically to professional accounts, meaning Business or Creator profiles. Personal accounts cannot be auto-published to by any tool, including Cloud Campaign. Converting a client to a professional account is free and takes a few minutes in Instagram's settings.

This requirement comes from Instagram, not from any particular scheduling tool. Meta restricts automatic publishing through its API to professional accounts, so every scheduler on the market has the same rule: to auto-publish, the connected Instagram profile must be a Business or Creator account.

Why Instagram requires it

Professional accounts exist for exactly this kind of use. They unlock the API access that powers auto-publishing, along with analytics, contact buttons, and ad tools. Personal profiles are walled off from third-party publishing entirely, which is Instagram's spam and safety boundary rather than a tool limitation.

Converting takes minutes and costs nothing

In the Instagram app, Settings, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. Choose Business for most brands or Creator for personalities and public figures. The account keeps its followers, posts, and handle. For Business accounts, connecting a Facebook Page completes the setup that most API publishing relies on. Agencies onboarding a new client should make this step one of the first items in the client onboarding checklist, because nothing can be scheduled until it is done.

What agencies should watch for

The common snags are clients who resist switching because they have heard professional accounts get less reach, and clients whose Instagram was never linked to a Facebook Page they control. The reach concern does not hold up in practice; professional accounts are the standard for essentially every brand on the platform. The Facebook Page linkage is worth resolving during onboarding while the client is responsive, rather than at 9 a.m. on the day the first post is supposed to go live.
