How much corporate control should franchise social media have?

Verified and kept current by the Cloud Campaign team
Quick answer

Enough to protect the brand, not so much that local pages go dead. The durable split: corporate owns identity, campaigns, and crisis response; locations own community content inside clear guardrails; and everything local passes a lightweight approval. Calibrate by risk: regulated industries centralize more, community businesses less.

This is the founding question of every franchise social program, and it has no universal answer, only a framework: control should be proportional to brand risk and inversely proportional to how local the customer relationship is.

What corporate should always own

Identity and stakes: logos, visual standards, brand voice, national campaigns, offers and pricing claims, anything regulated, and crisis response. When a location's post goes wrong, the headline names the brand, not the franchisee, so the categories with headline potential belong to the center. Corporate should also own the infrastructure: account access, page ownership, and the management platform, because ownership disputes are far cheaper to prevent than resolve.

What locations should own

The content only they can make: staff, customers, local events, community involvement, and replies to their own audience. This is also the content that performs; local faces and local moments reliably outdraw polished national creative on location pages. A network that centralizes everything gets brand-safe pages nobody follows.

The mechanism that makes the split real

Guardrails plus approvals. Guardrails are the written playbook: allowed topics, banned topics, voice notes, and asset rules. Approvals are the enforcement layer: local posts route past a reviewer, corporate or agency, before publishing, which converts the playbook from a hope into a process. With that mechanism in place, control becomes a dial rather than a binary, tightened for new or struggling locations and loosened for proven ones.

Calibrating the dial

Healthcare, finance, and anything compliance-touched sit near the centralized end. Restaurants, gyms, and home services thrive nearer the local end. Review the setting yearly; the right split at ten locations is rarely right at eighty, and the compliance system should evolve with it.
