How should you adapt one post for different platforms?

Quick answer

Keep the core idea constant and change the packaging. Match the format to each network's native strength, rewrite the hook for that audience, resize visuals to the platform's dimensions, and rework hashtags and links to fit how each network treats them. One concept should become several native posts, not one post copied everywhere.

The difference between a brand that feels native everywhere and one that feels like a syndication feed is not production budget, it is adaptation discipline. The idea travels; the packaging changes.

Start from the concept, not the post

Work from a platform-neutral core, such as a client insight, offer, or story, and ask what the native version looks like on each channel. On Instagram it might be a carousel; on LinkedIn, a text post with a stronger professional angle; on TikTok, a talking-head video; on Pinterest, a keyworded graphic; on Google Business Profile, a plain-language update with a call button. Same idea, five native artifacts.

The four things to actually change

Format first: lead with what each platform rewards, video on TikTok and Reels, text and documents on LinkedIn, saves-worthy visuals on Pinterest. Hook second: the first line does different work for a professional audience than for an entertainment scroll. Dimensions third: 9:16 for vertical surfaces, 4:5 or 1:1 for feeds, 16:9 for YouTube, because auto-cropped media is the fastest tell of lazy cross-posting. Metadata last: hashtags help discovery on Instagram and TikTok, add little on Facebook, and should be minimal on LinkedIn, while links belong only where the platform treats them well.

Make it a system, not an aspiration

At agency scale this only survives as a repeatable step: draft the master, run a per-platform adaptation pass, then schedule the whole set from one calendar. A one-page adaptation guide per client, covering voice, hashtag policy, and format priorities per channel, lets any team member produce the variants consistently instead of reinventing the judgment post by post.
